Ever wonder where the phrase “Dog Days of Summer” came from? According to Wikipedia, it’s from the Romans, who believed these hot summer days were associated with Sirius, the “Dog Star” - the brightest star in Canis Major (Also the brightest star in the summer sky.)
We thought the Dog Days of Summer were the perfect excuse to share our brightest stars. Or rather, our canine stars. The title “brightest” is still be argued over. For some odd reason, our cats feel they deserve to be considered the brightest of all the animals.
But that’s another post for another time. Because it is indeed the Dog Days of Summer and we’re celebrating man’s best friend. When you’re done reading about our four-footed friends, tell us about your dog. First up is Dreamer, owned by Donna Alward. The nine-year old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever likes long walks on the beach or in the woods, anything she can fetch, and cuddles on the couch.
As soon as Nikki Logan decided to give her handsome sheriff in Slow Dance with the Sheriff a canine ‘deputy’ she knew exactly what kind of dog it would be. Her big fella is a Bernese Mountain Dog—as gentle and lumbering as you could ask for. He’s no rocket scientist but he’s handsome and loving and loyal and just so very good—he’s never chewed anything, he’s never messed inside, he’s never run away during a walk. About the worst she can say about him is that he digs big holes; but with paws that size, he pretty much digs a hole just by scuffing his feet. Here’s her handsome guy at eight months old.
This is Shirley Jump’s dog Sophie, a Havanese, the dog her husband bought after they were Absolutely Not Getting Another Dog. (Shirley’s smile was his downfall.) The second dog is Max, Mr. Jump’s dog. He’s hyper and emotionally needy and very attached to his owners. He’s also all bark and no bite, Shirley reports. The guy carries stuffed animals everywhere he goes!
Barbara Wallace’s dog, Chuckie, is part Bassett Hound, part King Charles Spaniel. Rescued a year ago from a shelter, the five-year-old’s goal is to become pampered beyond belief. He spends most of his days practicing his cute look in an effort to earn more cookies and is pretty sure his new life would be perfect – if only his new owners would banish the cats from the house.
This is Byron, Kate Hardy’s English Springer Spaniel who was 10 in June. He’s known as Kleptodog because he steals shoes and cuddly toys (not to chew them, just to cuddle them – if you’re missing a shoe, just check one of his beds or the bottom of the garden) and he’s very, very partial to birthday cake. Don’t take your eye off your slice for a nanosecond, because he’ll seize the day! He’s starred in quite a few of her books (and once did duty as a cat). And he spends a lot of time snoozing in his bed next to her desk when she’s working 
Lucy Gordon offers two favorite pooches. Flump (short for Fat Lump) died ten years ago, but for her, he still lives, and has a permanent place on her website. http://lucy-gordon.com
The springer spaniel is called Toby. The family got him after her husband had a quadruple heart bypass and the doctor said he should take plenty of exercise. Flump was dead by then so they acquired Toby, and they always reckon he saved Daddy’s life by demanding long walks every day.
Melissa McClone’s family adopted Chaos, a Norwegian Elkhound, in 2008. Her name gave Melissa pause – that is until she understood the dog’s roots. She was a singleton puppy born by C-section so her birth was chaotic. Given Melissa’s chaotic family, Chaos seemed like a perfect fit and she is! Wherever they are, home or away, is where she wants to be. She gladly jumps into the minivan ready for adventure. She thinks she’s a lap dog, all forty-six pounds of her! Each morning while Melissa blogs and read email, she crawls up and takes a short nap. But it’s Chaos’ fondness for food where she’s lived up to her name. A few months ago, the family had to make a late night run to the emergency vet after she sneaked into the pantry and got into her food bag! Of course this happened at deadline time. Oh, well… Chaos is protective of the kids and the cats. Kittens are her favorite, and she makes sure the bigger cats don’t pick on the smaller ones. In other words, the McClones just can’t imagine their family without Chaos.
And finally, we have a handsome trio. Cowboy, Mandy, S’Mores inspire Barbara MacMahon every day. How could they not with those adorable faces?
