Trusting Again with Susan Meier

I wasn’t surprised when a reviewer of THE TYCOON’ S SECRET DAUGHTER gave the book a 3.  She said she couldn’t relate to the hero getting a second chance. He didn’t deserve it.

And she was right. He didn’t deserve a second chance. Max is a recovering alcoholic falling in love with his ex-wife again, knowing that it’s highly unlikely that she’ll be able to forgive him enough to take him back.

She shouldn’t. She would be crazy to. He’d done so many things wrong, including ruin what promised to be a wonderful marriage, that he doesn’t deserve a second chance.

But Max is beyond looking for forgiveness. He’s come to terms with who he was and who he is and who he thinks he can be. He’s lost the need for “reputation.” He’s ruined his. He’s lost the need to be important. Being important was part of what tipped him over the edge. Max, more than any other hero I’ve ever written about, is real.

In deciding he doesn’t deserve a second chance, in walking away from everything he wants in order to protect the ones he loves, in taking his place, working hard, never expecting a free ride, he has become a truly honest man.

So maybe, as the reviewer pointed out, it is difficult for an alcoholic to be trusted, to get a second chance. Maybe, as with Kate, Max’s ex-wife, it is nauseatingly frightening to find yourself being drawn into the orbit of a man who hurt you and who can’t promise you any more than one day at a time.

Maybe.

Maybe.

The world is full of maybes. But if every once in a while somebody somewhere doesn’t give a sinner a second chance, we’d all be alone. Because in each of our lifetimes we’ve all done something.

Max and Kate’s story is a sometimes sad, sometimes funny, story of two very real people falling in love again…against both their better judgments. It will draw you in. It will make you think. And if I’ve done my job, it will make you believe again.

Because in the end, that’s all we really have. The power to take a breath, take a chance and say, I believe. Please don’t let me down.

So what do you think? Do people deserve a second chance…or as the reviewer pointed out, are there some people who just can’t be trusted?
