The Nanny Who Saved Christmas

The tree that is currenty residing in Michelle Douglas’s home is on the smaller side. Then again, it takes very little storage space and there’s no furniture conundrum to solve (unlike yesterday’s entry!)!

Michelle is adding a copy of her current release, THE NANNY WHO SAVED CHRISTMAS to the prize list! Just leave a comment today to be entered (we’ll be counting one entry per day, but you can certainly comment more than once!) and come back on Dec 26 to find out if you won!

I’ve always loved Christmas stories. When I was a little girl I really really loved reading about Christmas in the northern hemisphere. To my childish mind snow was the most magical thing on earth. Oh, for the wonder of a white Christmas! It seemed so much more exotic than a beach Christmas in Australia.

So, earlier in the year when my editor asked if I’d consider writing a Christmas story I jumped at the chance. And yet it wasn’t a white Christmas or even a beach Christmas that gripped my imagination, but the idea of spending Christmas on a huge cattle station in Outback Australia where the temperature soars above 40 degrees Celsius most days.

Bringing Christmas to life in this setting was so much fun.

The book was a gift to write. A fact I firmly attribute to the heroine. I found Nicola so easy to relate to. She’s suffered a severe disappointment and has come to the Outback to pull herself together and make herself over. She wants to get fit, she wants to lose half a stone and when she returns home to Melbourne she’s determined to return stronger, smarter…and sleeker.

But Nicola has two weaknesses—chocolate coated peanuts and her very sexy boss, Cade Hindmarsh—and both of these test her determination to her its limits.

I’m the dessert queen in my family so I empathise with Nicola’s sweet tooth. And just because it’s Christmas I thought I’d share a new recipe I’m trialling this year.

Fruitcake crumble slice: Using an electric mixer beat 150g butter with 2/3 cup of icing sugar until creamy. Add 1 ¾ cups plain flour (sifted) and ½ cup of ground almonds and stir until mixture forms a crumble. Reserve one cup of crumble. Press remaining mixture into a greased and lined square cake pan. Top with 400g can of pie apple. Add 300g of crumbled leftover fruitcake to reserved crumble mix and gently combine. Scatter over apple and bake for 35 minutes (180C) until golden. Cool in pan. Cut into squares and serve with thick cream.

Sounds delish, huh? So…what are you having for dessert this Christmas?
