Day in the Life
| < Back
Jessica Hart's first memories are of Africa, where she was born,
and she grew up with incurably itchy feet. In her time, she has
traveled from Afghanistan to Australia, from Algeria to Belize, from
Cameroon to Indonesia, with various stops en route, having a wonderful
time, but failing dismally to live as dangerously as she had always
secretly wanted.
Before becoming a full-time writer, her career,
if you can call it that, consisted of a haphazard series of jobs
around the world. Her last 'proper' job was on the foreign news
desk of a national newspaper. Before that, she was on expedition
in West Africa, cooked on an outback cattle station, taught English
as a foreign language, was production assistant for a theatre company
and research assistant for a publisher of restaurant guides and
filled in the gaps between by working as a secretary, waitress,
chambermaid and dishwasher. Regular readers will probably recognize
how often she has drawn on her varied experience for inspiration
when it comes to setting and plot!
Now she lives in York, an historic
city in the north of England with Mungo, a West Highland White
terrier, and two very large, very standoffish tabbies. At the end
of the road are the medieval city walls and the famous Minster,
one of the most beautiful buildings in Europe. While still yearning
for wide horizons, she has perversely chosen to study for a PhD
in Medieval Studies, so between that and writing romance, deadlines
have become a way of life!
